Water: The First Mercy

The Existence of Water

“And We made from water every living thing.” — Qur’an 21:30

Before prayer, before the Kaaba, before mankind, there was water.

It’s no coincidence that Allah chose water as the foundation of life. It’s not just a biological necessity — it’s a sacred symbol. From the embryonic fluid in the womb to the rain that revives dead earth, water is Allah’s signature of mercy.

But what if we told you… water feels?

The Divine Blueprint

Qur’an 21:30 hits differently when you realise this ayah is more than a metaphor. Science now confirms that every cell, every heartbeat, every blink, relies on water. Your body? 60% water. Your brain? Almost 80%.

Allah made the most humble molecule the most powerful. And He made it pure.

Water Has a Memory? Dr. Emoto’s Experiments

Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto ran wild experiments in the 1990s where he exposed water to different words, sounds, and intentions.

When he showed water words like “love” or “thank you”, the molecules froze into beautiful crystal shapes. But with words like “hate” or “you disgust me”, the crystals were chaotic and broken. He even tried playing Quranic recitation to water — and the results? Stunning symmetry. SubhanAllah.

Whether or not the full science is settled, the takeaway is crystal clear: what we say, think, and believe affects what we touch, even water.

“Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?” — Qur’an 55:13

Discover the miraculous impact of Surah Al-Isra' on the water by Veda Austin, a New Zealand-based water researcher, artist, author, and public speaker. Veda's work builds upon concepts such as the water memory concept, which was popularised by researchers, including Dr. Emoto's experiment.

Zamzam: Liquid Light

The Prophet (saw) said, “Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Ibn Majah)

Zamzam isn’t just blessed because of location — it's blessed because of intention. Millions make du’a before sipping it, and millions more testify to its healing. Even in labs, Zamzam water shows unique mineral purity and resistance to bacterial contamination.

It’s like the water recognises its purpose. Just like we should.

You Are Water. You Are Witness

Here’s the wild part: the water in your body right now is ancient. Some of it could’ve passed through rivers at the time of Musa (as), or rained on the Earth when Adam (as) walked it.

Water cycles, flows, and never disappears — it just changes form.So the water you drink, cry, and make wudu with? It’s been here. Witnessing.

Every time you take a sip, make wudu, or stand in the rain, you connect with something timeless.

And maybe that’s why Allah chose it as the first mercy:

It cleanses but also remembers. It gives life, but also reflects intention. It’s soft, but nothing breaks rock like flowing water.“He sends down rain from the sky, and valleys flow according to their measure...” — Qur’an 13:17

So the next time you feel disconnected, heavy, or lost… drink the water. Touch water.Let it remind you of who you are — and Who created you.
